George Lucas had the rough notes for a series of 9 Star Wars movies before he begain filming episode 4, A New Hope.
George Lucas directed Star Wars (1977), Star Wars- Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999), Star Wars- Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Wars- Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005).Irvin Kershner directed The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Richard Marquand directed Return of the Jedi (1983).
George Lucas's first film was 1971's "THX 1138"
Because IV-VI (4-6) are often called the "Origional Trilogy" George Lucas thought of that idea first, and made I-III (1-3) later to tell the story of what happened beore episodes 4-6. 4-6 would be sort of incomplete without 1-3. George Lucas wrote all six episodes at once. when deciding which one to make first he went with episode IV because it was by far the cheapest and easiest to make. Addition by SJ Commander: While that may be part of the reason, another reason was that George Lucas wanted to make Episode I first, but he decided against making it because he wanted to make the giant, sprawling metropolis Coruscant as good and realistic as possible, and the CGI techniques and matching programs and computers weren't there yet. So he decided against messing with his grand vision and made Episode IV first because it required less grandiose CGI techniques.
He directed the original "Star Wars," which was released in 1977, as well as "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" (1999), "Star Wars Episode II; Attack of the Clones" (2002); and "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" (2005).
The first Star Wars movie was simply called Star Wars because George Lucas thought there was little chance for a sequel. After more movies were made, the name was changed to Star Wars: A New Hope.

The phantom menace. George Lucas made a new hope first and then decided to make more after V and IV. so he made A new hope IV and the phantom menace I.
Star Wars Episode 1: The Phanton Menace, written and directed by George Lucas, was released in 1999. It was the first film in a three-part prequel to the original Star Wars movie series.
''Prototype''
He directed the original "Star Wars," which was released in 1977, as well as "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" (1999), "Star Wars Episode II; Attack of the Clones" (2002); and "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" (2005).
There's not. The original "Star Wars" was episode four, it was just released first due to technical restrictions in filming. George Lucas knew technology wasn't advanced enough to make the first three in the 1970's, so he waited. EPISODE I: The Phantom Menace EPISODE II: Attack of the Clones EPISODE III: Revenge of the Sith EPISODE IV: A New Hope (AKA "Star Wars" - the first one released) EPISODE V: The Empire Strikes Back EPISODE VI: Return of the Jedi
i think it would be safe to say that George Lucas was the one, since he basically created and thought up the whole saga!!!!!! episode 4 was the first movie to come out in theaters in 1977. It was Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope.
The first Star Wars movie was simply called Star Wars because George Lucas thought there was little chance for a sequel. After more movies were made, the name was changed to Star Wars: A New Hope.
