Yes, Carpathia helped the survivors of Titanic. She arrived near the scene of the sinking of Titanic at about 4:00 AM. She started to rescue passengers around then until the last person, Second-Officer Lightoller, boarded at 8:10 in the morning.

No, there was another ship closer, the small steamer ship, the Californian.

The crew of the ship noticed Titanic release flares but didn't realise just why she was releasing them. She also tried signalling the ship with lights, but it seams there was a confusion as to what Titanic was 'saying' and she gave up.

She did not receive the CDQ wireless message because her wireless operator, Cyril Furmstone Evans, had turned in for the night. This led to a new maritime law. wireless sets had to be manned 24/7 from then on.

It was only when the curiosity of the Californian'sCaptain got the better of him, did he wake the wireless operator and ask him to find out which ship had fired rockets that night. Evans only then discovered that the Titanic had sunk from the Carpatihia's operator while she was picking up the last of the survivors.
