All the Plains tribes fought against each other most of the time and the Cheyenne were no exception. Inter-tribal warfare was the only way a young man could achieve respect and status - and most young women would ignore him until he had proven himself to be a successful hunter and a brave warrior.

The Cheyenne, just like the other Plains groups, were based on a warrior ideal; young men entered one of six warrior societies with the expectation that they would kill enemy warriors, take scalps and steal enemy horses. Without these achievements they were considered worthless.

They fought against the Crows, the Assiniboin, the Mandan, the Kiowa, the Pawnee and the Ute; even their relationships with the Arapaho and Lakota varied between peace and war.
