Historically, lamas live in a lamasery; they are the Buddhist monks of Tibet. However, after the Chinese invasion of Tibet the Dalai Lama took refuge in India, and now travels the world.

On the other hand, llamas live mostly in the Andes mountains in South America. They are a high altitude version of a camel.

Lamas most commonly live in monasteries (called "lamaseries" in that tradition), but they do also live in caves. ANY wilderness, forest or other deserted place devoid of humankind is "desert". So lamas do sometimes live in the desert.
