There are two primary mountain ranges in the United States. In the West, the Rocky Mountains run an almost north-south route through the western states. In the East, The Appalachian Mountains run diagonally in a southwestern route through eastern states from New England down to Georgia. In both of these mountain ranges, exist other smaller mountain ranges with names separate from the primary range. The Appalachian Mountains and all of its other smaller ranges are millions of years OLDER than the Rocky Mountains and all of its smaller mountain ranges.
Note: By smaller, this means shorter in distance than the primary mountain range. Some of the smaller ranges can be shorter in height, as well, but not necessarily.
The Rocky Mountains is the largest mountain range in North America. It has elevations of more than 14,000 feet, which are some of the highest in North America. The range stretches from Alaska to the Western US.

The United States has six states with rocky mountains. The six states are: Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Utah.
The "continental backbone" of North America is the Rocky Mountains and of South America is the Andes. However, these are separate mountain ranges, on different tectonic plates.
