Currently, PlayStation Trophies are only for a few PS3 games like Uncharted. You get them for doing special things, and you get rewarded, much like the Xbox 360's achievements. Some games are getting patched for trophy support. You can learn what you need to do to get a trophy by getting a game that supports trophies, and choosing it from the Trophies sub-menu.
