The Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan (www.camvap.ca) is the dispute resolution program for consumers in Canada that have problems with the assembly of their vehicle or with how the manufacturer implements its new vehicle warranty. CAMVAP covers new or used owned or leased vehicles that are from the current model year and up to an additional four model years old. CAMVAP is an arbitration program. It is free to consumers. Hearings are held in the consumer's home community. The process normally takes less than 70 days from start to finish. Most consumers are able to handle their own case without the assistance of lawyers. The manufacturers do not use lawyers. Their representatives usually are serving or retired district parts and services representatives. An inspection of the vehicle normally is part of an arbitration hearing and the arbitrator can order a technical inspection of the vehicle at the program's expense if doing so is required. CAMVAP arbitrators can order the manufacturer to buyback the vehicle; repair it at the manufacturer's expense; pay for repairs already completed; pay out of pocket expenses for items such as towing, diagnostic testing, rental cars and accomodation related to the problem with the vehicle. The arbitrator can also determne that the manufacturer has no liability in the matter. CAMVAP is available in every Canadian Province and Territory. CAMVAP can be reached at 1-800-207-0685 from within Canada or directly from its website.

Canada has a new car lemon law that is similar to those in the United States. The Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan protects consumers from the hassles of buying a vehicle that doesn't work properly. Through the plan, arbitrators work to find a common ground between dealers and consumers who feel they have been cheated.

Can you cancel a new car contract?

Most states have a three-day grace period after signing a contract for a car purchase, mortgage, etc. That means you can change your mind within three days and get out of the contract. After that, or if you don't live in such a state, you're stuck. Most state do not on vehicle purchases. As far as I know California is the only state that has that law and it just went into effect in 2005. In Texas, the law says once you sign the contract and take posession of hthe car, you are done unless it is a lemon. If you do not sign off on the car and leave it at the dealership, you foil the completion of the contract cycle in taking financing and registration. That is straight from the DOTx rules. The car that my dad sign for the money was going to be out of pocket. There was no finance, because my dad would not qualify for loans. The car dealership was aware of my dads situation. The car was never purchased yet, no money has been exchanged. In the stat of California is he still liable?
