The movie is based on a totally made-up story, a novel by Sir Walter Scott written in 1820. Ivanhoe never existed. So his walking around in a movie is one big historical inaccuracy.
Apart from that, the story of him trying to 'free' king Richard is not correct; Richard was ransomed by his mother and was then allowed to go home by Leopold V of Austria who had imprisoned him for murdering Leopold's cousin. Also incorrect: the idea that John was a 'bad' king and Richard a 'good' king. Strangely enough, it was exactly the other way around. John is considered by contemporaries and historians an able administrator, while Richard during his reign hardly spent any time at all in England. He preferred when not on one of his many military campaigns to live in southern France and regarded England only as a source of revenue.
No it is a work of fiction by dreamworks. It does incorporate a lot of historical fairy tales into it but is not itself a historical movie.
