It was a major city in the whaling industry of Massachusetts back then, but it was not the only one. Whaling was also conducted out of Nantucket, an island community near Cape Cod. Both New Bedford and Nantucket had favorable conditions (including good harbors), and in fact, Nantucket ultimately surpassed New Bedford by about 1860.
