It is a linear motion valve that starts or stops the flow. It got its name from the element sliding into the flow stream to provide shutoff, hence acting like a gate. Thus it is used either in the fully closed or fully open positions.

Gate valves require very little space along the pipe axis and hardly restrict the flow of fluid. When the gate is fully opened it enables the gate valve to offer straightway flow with very little pressure drop.

Gate Valves are also called as Sluice Gate Valve. Automated Gate Valve also exists which are either electric or pneumatic actuator, but as manual gate valve are cost effective hence it is affordable and as gate valves are used lesser.

Working of Gate Valve

The main three components of Gate Valve are: body, bonnet and stem

When the handwheel is rotated which rotates the stem and due to it there is vertical movement of the gate via threads. They are considered multi-turn valve as it requires more than 360 degree to fully open the gate. When the gate is lifted from the flow path, it is open and when it returns it is closed and hence the flow is stopped.
