Humphrey Bogart
Actually, George Raft did not reject the part of Rick in Casablanca. He wanted the part very, very badly. It is a case of true, perfect irony. Raft had always played tough-guy roles, and wanted to change his image by playing the hero. So, he turned down the role of "Mad Dog" Roy Erle in High Sierra (1941) and Sam Spade in the Maltese Falcon(1941). These roles were then offered to Humphrey Bogart, who was happy to take them.It was Bogart's success in those roles which made the studios want him for the part of Rick in Casablanca. Had George Raft accepted the roles in High Sierra and the Maltese Falcon, the studios wouldn't have wanted Bogart so badly for Casablanca, and Raft might have gotten to play Rick.
This 1941 Crime Mystery starred Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor and Gladys George. Humphrey Bogart was the star in Maltese Falcon and played private investigator, Sam Spade. He co-starred with Gladys George, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet.

Casablanca premiered in New York City in 1942 coinciding with Major General Patton's invasion of the the Moroccan harbour town. Its nationwide release was in 1943 which coincided with the Casablanca Conference between President Roosevelt and PM Churchill. Casablanca was a B movie which George Raft turned down, and Bogie scooped it up, but the timing made it a classic.
