On a starting note, summer officially ends on the equinox, which in 2014 falls on September 23. This is not defined based on temperature but the orientation of Earth's tilt in relation to the sun. People like to put things into neatly defined categories, but these do not always work so well when applied to nature. We draw definite lines defining the official beginning and end of summer, but nature doesn't really care where we draw our lines. Divisions in nature are often somewhat fuzzy. So while we may say summer abruptly ends on a given date, the actual weather transitions more gradually. When these changes generally occur depends in part on your region's climate, but they also vary from one year to the next.
