Be completely honest about your record and don't try to hide or minimize it in any way when you fill out Job Applications or speak to potential employers. It doesn't have to be the first thing you say but you should be upfront about explaining your situation and basically tell them, "I was in jail. I did something stupid. I've learned my lesson and grown up. Now I just need a chance to prove myself." Some people will discriminate against you but some people will be willing to give you a chance. You might have to take a job that's somewhat crappy but that's okay -- if you get the job and keep it for awhile (I'm talking about six months or a year or more -- not days or weeks), you'll be on your way to having a good reference and moving on with your life. But the key is: you need to be honest about your background, you need to not screw up again, and you need to be a good employee when you do get a job (even if you know you don't want to stay in that job forever). In the meantime, you may be able to work on getting your record expunged...that would help down the road.

What was the job of a 'Gentleman' in the 1800's?

There were three gentlemanly professions- you could go into the church, the military or politics. Solicitors and doctors were also acceptable although a cut below the three above. Finally you could be in trade (as a wealthy merchant) but this was not considered gentlemanly at all. A landed gentleman wouldn't have a job at all, his job was to manage his estate, take rent from his tenants etc

What caused the 1914 rescession to end?
