Probably because they wanted teens to have their own channel so they can show more of the Nickelodeon shows like iCarly, Victorious, Spongebob and Big Time Rush on Nickelodeon and put the more teen-ish shows like Degrassi on teenick so little kids won't have to see it because it's on a separate channel. They probably put nicktoons as a separate channel for a similar reason. Probably just to give iCarly, Victorious, Spongebob and Big Time Rush more time and put more of the animation/Cartoons type of shows geared twords little boys (and sometimes girls like with The Mighty B) on their own channel. They probably just have all those separate channels so every age group can watch what they want at the right time for them
