You have to realize that the Civil War was over just 35 years before. Many who fought in the War were still alive and they still believed that blacks were inferior.
Males finally had the right to vote in 1870. Then there the same-but-equal rules which kept the blacks segregated, the whites-only restaurants, riding in the back of the bus rules and many other things like this. Most occurred in the South.
And it is still going on today.

Freedom greatly changed the lives of African Americans in the south. After they became free, they were no longer forced to do work for plantation owners, and could have their own families.
Well, Jackie Robinson was the first African American in the MLB. Without him, African Americans may not be able to be part of the MLB- even today. He also inspired many African Americans to prove that they could do anything white people can.
