Freedom greatly changed the lives of African Americans in the south. After they became free, they were no longer forced to do work for plantation owners, and could have their own families.
While the Fifteenth Amendment ensured that African-Americans could not be denied the right to vote simply because they were African-American, the southern states came up with various ways to disenfranchise blacks.

Leaving the South was not about economic opportunity or living a 'higher moral life'. The Great Migration was about African Americans starting over and making sacrifices for future generations. The journey north represented not the end of a struggle but only its beginning.
