Some of the first emergency housing erected after the explosion was named after Massachussetts' governor, and in 1918 Halifax sent Boston a large Christmas tree as a gift. The tradition was revived in the 1970s and every Christmas the large Boston Christmas tree is a gift from the people of Nova Scotia.
