Francisco Vasquez de Coronado (1510-1554) died of unreported causes in Mexico City more than 12 years after his expeditions to explore northern Mexico. He explored what is now the southwest US and fought several times with natives such as the Pueblo. He was injured in a fall from his horse in December, 1541, and returned to Mexico. He died in Mexico City, where he was still an official at the time of his death, in either July or September of 1554. (disputed dates exist)
