∙ 11y agoWe are told that God is Love. Yes, HE is, and yet wars happen involving God's people. In the story of David and Goliath, David had been anointed as a king by Samuel previously. He was not the first born, nor the greatest warrior, but a simple shepherd at his father's estate. Yet he was chosen by God to be the future king.
Now since the king must lead his people and must be the servant of all (a difficult concept for many), it fell to David to defend his people when Goliath...and his four brothers!...were set to help destroy the people of Israel. Saul the current king, did not go out to the battle, but a shepherd boy did. His own brothers mocked him, a common theme in The Bible.
God showed mercy and compassion, prime components of love, by narrowing the war down to six people; David, Goliath, and his four brothers. Goliath was a giant as were his brothers, so David was over matched by any standards. Yet he went forward armed with his favorite weapon, the sling..and picked up the five stones he thought he needed for the five brothers. Note that he was so sure of his skill that he only picked up five, not ten or more.
When David killed Goliath with the first stone, the entire army ran. God showed the love to the Philistine nation by inducing them to run after only one champion went down. HE showed the love for the Israelites by giving the champion that could do the job in the least amount of carnage. Thirdly, God gave the sign by David's valor and victory that this would be a king worth having.
