Although not specifically stated in the film, I doubt that Forrest had an intellectual understanding of the reasons America was involved in the war in Vietnam. But this seemed to work in his favor. Forrest was excellent at following orders, which is what is needed in the military. If fact, he said it himself that all you have to do is make your bed real neat, shine your boots and always answer 'yes, drill sargent!'. Forrest excelled at this which is why Drill Sargent loved him.

But loosing his 'best good friend Bubba', Forrest didn't like talking about the war. Even with his limited understanding, he knew the war was a bad thing. You don't have to be an Einstein to comprehend the great loss of human life that resulted in America's involvement in Vietnam.
