Although not specifically stated in the film, I doubt that Forrest had an intellectual understanding of the reasons America was involved in the war in Vietnam. But this seemed to work in his favor. Forrest was excellent at following orders, which is what is needed in the military. If fact, he said it himself that all you have to do is make your bed real neat, shine your boots and always answer 'yes, drill sargent!'. Forrest excelled at this which is why Drill Sargent loved him.
But loosing his 'best good friend Bubba', Forrest didn't like talking about the war. Even with his limited understanding, he knew the war was a bad thing. You don't have to be an Einstein to comprehend the great loss of human life that resulted in America's involvement in Vietnam.

Bubba Gump is a shrimp company that got its name from the 1994 movie Forrest Gump. In the army, Forrest meets his friend Bubba, who wants to open a shrimp company and fish for shrimp. Bubba dies in the Vietnam War, so Forrest starts the shrimp company with Lieutenant Dan instead.
Do you mean, the song that plays when they are in the helicopter, about to land in Vietnam for the first time? If so, the song is, "Fortunate Son," by Creedence Clearwater Revival. If not, then feel free to delete this answer.
There were many historical events within the 30 year period in the life of Forrest Gump. The advent of TV, Elvis Presley and rock and roll, civil rights and civil unrest in the 1960's. The war in Vietnam, politics and several presidents, space flight, AIDS, the birth of personal computers such as Apple. The movie Forrest Gump has become an American icon with such phrases as 'life is like a box of chocolates', 'run Forrest run', 'stupid is as stupid does', and my favorite, 'sometimes there just aren't enough rocks'.

No, there's nothing at all about the movie that's true. (I mean, some of the things, like Watergate and the Vietnam War, really did happen, but Gump is a fictional character.)
Forrest Gump is a treasure of Americana and American history. Examples:the moon landing, America's involvement in the Vietnam war, the disco era, politics, civil rights, AIDS, personal computers, the fitness craze, celebrity deaths such as John Lennon and much more.
