Napoleon Bonaparte did not directly affect Mexico. However, by conquering Spain, he further cemented Mexicans' desire to declare independence, because if Spain's right to control Mexico was dubious after nearly three centuries, certainly France had no right to control Mexico after a few months in power. As a result, Miguel Hidalgo and the other Mexican Revolutionaries began their successful push for Mexican independence.

Napoleon III, the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, actually launched an invasion of Mexico in 1863 to create the Second Mexican Empire. This regime was able to control most of Mexico, but overthrown four years later by the Mexican Liberals led by Benito Juárez and supported by the United States.
