At the time of Confederation (1867) there were four original provinces: Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Three colonies subsequently joined: British Columbia (1871), Prince Edward Island (1873) and Newfoundland (1949). Rupert's Land and the Northwest Territories were transferred to Canada in 1870. Three provinces were created out of Rupert's Land and the Northwest Territories: Manitoba (1870), Alberta and Saskatchewan (both 1905). Yukon Territory was created in 1896 and the Territory of Nunavut in 1999.
