How did the African slave traders captured African and get them to the African coast?

Most were obtained by buying them from African chiefs. The policy of enslaving defeated enemies was common, and some tribes used them in trade. The demand for slaves led to the expansion of this activity in some areas of Africa.

Most slave traders didn't capture their cargo, they merely bought it from native tribal leaders. Many slaves were captives in various tribal wars. African natives practiced slavery long before white men even came to Africa. First non-African slave market was opened in Portugal in 1444. Until the second half of 16th century, slave trade was run under the monopoly of the Crown. After the monopoly was called off, it became possible for slaves to be delivered straight from Africa to the Americas. That brought a huge increase of transatlantic slave trade.
