The Cowardly Lion didn't die, either in the original 1900 book edition, or the beloved 1939 film version, of 'The Wizard of Oz'. At the end of the book, he became the Ruler of the Great Old Forest, where he previously had defeated the terrifying Giant Spider. In subsequent books in the royal histories of Oz, he was a less frequent character. But he always was perceived as friend and protector to Dorothy Gale, and then also to Princess Ozma of Oz.
