How did the French flag get its colors?

When the people of Paris forced Louis XVI to move into the Tuileries palace (in Paris) from Versailles, and accept a Constitution, Lafayette suggested a new flag, whaich was the white of the Bourbon dynasty surrounded by the colours of the City of Paris, blue and red. Please note that the French flag is not red, white and blue, but blue, white and red.

White had been adopted by the latest kings as the colour of the kingdom, in devotion to the Virgin Mary and to place the kingdom under her protection.

It is said that Lafayette championned the idea and a newly created cocard met a great popular success. In 1794 the Convention (the national assembly at the time) asked the famous painter Jacques Louis David to draw the flag and made it the national one.
