The muppets- a blend word of Mummers and Puppets, perhaps, were created by one Jim Henson in the sixties. Originally, like a vaudeville act- they bounced around the Television channels not having a regular spot- they were on the Jimmie Dean ( not the accident-victim actor- but a sort of country and western personality) around, my guess l966. There was considerable Puppet activity on television- such old hands as Howdy Doody, Winchell-Mahoney time- the Topo Gigio mouse on the Ed Sullivan program ( which required the efforts of at least three puppeteers)- and of course Supermarionation- adapting the idea to Science Fiction, the brain child of Gerry Anderson. Eventually the Muppets settled down on Sesame Street, but in fact, they antedated this show. I was familiar with them from various specials. I never watched Sesame Street.
