Back when there was still open range ( 'till the late 1940's in Fla , don't know about Texas ) farmers had a mark that they used to mark pigs from their sows ( so many notches in right or left , top or bottom inside or outside ) . Pigs that were off the teat but not butcher size ( shoats ) and unmarked were fair game to who ever marked them first .
