What did operation barbarosa refer to?

Operation Barbarossa refers to the invasion and occupation of the Soviet Union by the German Nazis. Hitler wanted the natural resources, land and OIL the Soviet Union had. He also hated communism with a passion. He was bent on wiping out communists. He managed to kill 20 million of them in that operation. He was defeated by the Red Army in the end because Hitler failed to keep his troops supplied with food, clothing for 20 below zero temperatures, ammo and replacements. I have included a link for you below so you will have the full story.

How long did operation barbarosa last?

Operation Babarossa began June 22nd, 1941 with the German invasion of Russia and ended when the German army ceased offensive action on December 5th, 1941 due to the harsh winter, and the need to rest and reorganize their units. It was superseded by Operation Typhoon. Operation Babarossa is sometimes inaccurately used to refer to the entire invasion of Russia from the time the German invaded until the Germans retreated from Russia; or even to refer to the entire German-Russian portion of the war.

Which countries participated in operation barbarosa?

The only allied country involved in operation Barbarossa was the USSR. On the axis side, Germany contributed a vast majority of the troops, but troops were also sent by Romania, Finland, Hungary, Italy, and Slovakia.

Why was operation barbarosa such a surprise move?

Operation Barbarossa, the code name for Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, was a surprise move primarily due to the non-aggression pact signed between Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939, which led many to believe that the two nations would maintain a cooperative relationship. Additionally, the rapid expansion of German forces in Western Europe had diverted attention away from the Eastern Front, causing Soviet intelligence to underestimate the likelihood of an attack. The sheer scale and speed of the invasion took the Soviets by surprise, leading to initial significant setbacks for the Red Army.
