It depends upon the accessories for an automobile.
1. car with just headlights, heater, wipers and etc. about 35-45 amps
2. car with AC added 65 amps
3. Newer computerized car with AC and etc 100 amps
4. car with all the above and a amplifier 140 amps (depending on the size of the amp)
5. Take note that a typical school bus with all the heaters and etc normally will be ok with an alternator from 100-150 amps.
When running voltmeter should read approx. 13.8-14.2 volts

It is most likely a bad diode in the alternator that is causing both lights to stay on. Or its just your alternator going out, replace alternator, and check pads an rotors.
Sometimes when parts are new, they have coatings and etc. that will smell when parts are warm. For example, alternator windings are coated with a electrical varnish. When the alternator is charging, it creates heat. This causes the paint to smell and odors such as a burning smell can be common for a couple of days.

remove alternator and bracket.with a drill bit smaller in size than he the thread on the broken bolt, carefully drill broken part of bolt that is still in engine.then use an" easy out " to remove broken peice.an" easy out" can be purchased with the correct size drill bit if you know the bolt size.
The alternator retaining bolt size is 9/16. The alternator bolts will be three inches long. The alternator tensioner bolt is 9/16 by one inch.

One way to check the CDI on an alternator is to use an ohmmeter. If you do not know how to use an ohmmeter, you may be better off by taking your vehicle to a repair shop to look at the alternator.
