You have to configure your internet Wi-Fi with the built in Wi Fi in your DS. From the menu right after the title screen, you can go down to Nintendo WFC settings, tap Nintendo Wi Fi Connection Settings, and have your system detect a wireless network around you. If your network uses a certain type of encoding, like WPA, your router will have to be reset to allow WEP or open access. (Nintendo Wi Fi doesn't work with WPA).

If you have WEP, you'll have to input the WEP number key manually. It's not the passcode, but the first number generated by it.

To do this from the game itself, go to any Pokemon Center and go downstairs to use the Wi Fi Club. The first time you do this, they will give you a Pal Pad, which generates your particular friend code (so others can register you and battle you, trade with you, etc.). The Nintendo Wi Fi will try to set itself up automatically, but if it can't, like if you have a WEP number key, you'll need to do it from the start screen.

There is also, after you've finished setting up the Pal Pad and the Wi Fi, a Global Trading System, or GTS, in Jubilife City. It's on the left of the city and you can't use it until you have at least one Pokemon badge. This will allow you to trade/battle globally with other players.
