to get to johto
you have to defeat your rival 1500 times
to get to kanto
you have to defeat your rival 1000 times
to get to hoen
defeat your rival 500 times
p.s. i know this because i am in the johto region getting all the ultra rare Pokemon and i have caught a lugia and ho-oh there in the two towers.
p.s.s. this will take some time to do this and it will probably take about two months like it did me.
