the difference is ones north and the other is south

One is in the South and one in the North. This means that one is closer to the equator and and one isn't. Therefore, one is perhaps more tropical and one is more dry.

The South Indian temples are well known for their large pyramidal shaped gates called 'Gopuram'. They are also often characterized by a vimana, which is a concave pyramidal tower placed over the sanctum. This is often done in tiers on which small dome like structures are placed. South Indian Temples also have a lot of landscape surrounding it, like water & trees.

North Indian temples have a vertical presence, which towers that rise up one after another if seen from jagmohon (or the entry space). The last tower which is the tallest doesn't have any tiers & is a concave pyramid, the other towers though are also pyramidal in shape are tiered but these tiers are more finer if compared to the tiers of the vimana in south indian temples. The plinth of the North Indian temples are very high which is generally not the case in south indian temples.
