Mexico isn't affected as directly and immediately as Louisiana and the other coastal states of the United States of America. Specifically, the disastrous chain of events began about 41 miles [66 kilometers] off the southeastern coastline of Louisiana. But the coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico, the islands of the Caribbean, and the waters of both bodies are important habitats for wildlife and particularly for migratory birds. So the cultures, the economies, the ecotourism and tourism industries, and the environment of the entire area is impacted to lesser and greater degrees.

Effects still are being evaluated in areas immediate to and distant from the oil spill of April 20, 2010. They still are being evaluated in both the short- and the long-term.
