Cinematography is basically like photographing a movie (you are using very similar artistic aspects when photographing and filming), except you are capturing it with moving images. Lighting, color, tone, clothing, mood, focal point, focus, camera placement, depth of field, and movement are all very important elements in cinematography. Cinematography is the aesthetics of a motion picture film - it's what you see with the eye.
Some of my favorite examples of beautiful cinematography can be seen in such films as: Atonement (2007), In the Mood for Love (2000), A Woman is a Woman (1961), Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Amelie (2001), and The Tree of Life (2011).
Because film is an art form. There are basically two types of movies: movies we enjoy, which are entertaining but hold no real artistic value; then there films which use aspects such as cinematography to add to their artistic value. Here's an example: Any Disney sequel which you may or may not find entertaining and enjoy watching is usually only released for the sole purpose of making Disney more money. The story line's are lacking, there may be faulty premises, etc... it's just a bad movie. On the other hand, Citizen Kane is one of the best pieces of artistic film. It is so textbook-esque that it is studied by film majors every year for that reason.
Basically cinematography exists to distinguish between art and profit
