The fern leaf appears as a transparent holographic window on all denominations of New Zealand banknotes.

There is also a printed fern leaf above the holographic window on both sides of the note. When held up to the light, the front and back fern leaves align perfectly with each other.

Holographic windows on polymer banknotes are an update on the watermark used on paper notes. They make realistic counterfeiting of banknotes that little bit more difficult to achieve.
