Typically, the Prime Minister is the leader of the largest party in the House of Commons. Therefore, theoretically to become Prime Minister, one must be selected as the leader of a federal political party and then lead the party to the largest number of seats in a federal election. Alternatively, being chosen as the leader of the largest party in parliament upon the resignation of the incumbent Prime Minister would lead to becoming Prime Minister.
