Why did Swami Dayanand criticise Hinduism?

This question betrays a misconception of the asker. Swamy Dayanand did never criticise Hinduism. He himself was a devout Hindu and became a monk according Hindu tradition. But it is true that he wanted Hinduism to be known by another name i.e. Vedic religion or Arya religion because he thought the term 'Hindu' was denigrating to the Hindus, by virtue of being first used by Persians. He wanted to re-establish the Vedas as the supreme authority for Hinduism as he thought that their position was unjustly usurped by the latter-day books such as mythological texts and epics. He refused to recognize the latter-day monistic Hindu cults such as Saivism and Vaishnavism and declared that whatever name appeared in the Vedas, it solely addressed one single God Almighty, but not different gods like most Hindus and others understood them. His constant refrain was "Let's go back to the Vedas" He wanted the Vedas to be the sole holybook for the Hindus, like the Bible is to the Christians and Qoran to Muslims. So, it is clear that he wanted the ancient Hinduism in place of its modern version which accepts the message of every godman, not just the Vedas.
