The Portuguese nobleman and explorer, Vasco de Gama is responsible of opening the trade route between Europe and India. He reached India for the first time in 1497.
Although motivated by the search for gold, spices, and slaves, the Portuguese initially were in search of a sea route to India.

For Bartolomeu Dias [c. 1450-May 29, 1500] proved by his expedition of 1487-1488 that it was possible to sail down and around Africa, into the Indian Ocean, and on to India. Previously, trade with India had been by the overland route. And that route was controlled by Muslim middlemen.
