Why is the Portuguese Prince Henry of 1394 1460 nicknamed 'the Navigator'?

Prince Henry of Portugal was called the Navigator because he commissioned many exploratory voyages - mainly in search of a sea-route to the Indies - and had maps made based on the explorers' data. Much of the early mapping of the West African coast came about this way. He was also called the Navigator because of the navigation school he built and that's were he taught sailors map making ship building and all about navigation (well as much as he knew). Through the school, he supported the efforts of Portuguese traders explore south along to coast of Africa in an attempt to sail all the way AROUND Africa and to reach the spice islands of India, Malaysia and Indonesia.
