When soaking whites in bleach, it's generally recommended to soak them for about 5 to 10 minutes. Make sure to dilute the bleach according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically using one part bleach to ten parts water. Always check the fabric care labels to ensure that the material is bleach-safe, and rinse thoroughly afterward to remove any residual bleach.
Bleach does eventually lose its effectiveness, depending on how long it is stored. When diluted with water, bleach loses it's ability to disinfect after 24 hrs. www.med.cornell.edu/ehs/faq/biological_safety.htm
If you have been around it recently, the fumes tend to stay in the nasal passages for a long while. Bleach fumes are not a good thing to breathe in.

I had the same problem. I separated them into whites, colors and reds (which will bleed)....For the whites I soaked them in a strong bleach/detergent solution. For the colors I used detergent, the new Purex crystals and a small amount of bleach. Same for the reds but a little less bleach.....The bleach is critical as that seems to be the only thing that actually kills the mold spores. Soak them for at least an hour.

We all know that after time washing white clothes makes them look dingy. Especially if you have young children that are good at making themselves messy. The perfect solution to it is to soak your whites overnight in a bucket of water with Cascade Dishwasher liquid. Just fill up a 5 gallon bucket of water and put about 1 cup of Cascade in it and mix it around. Soak all of your whites that are dingy in it. Be cautious not to put anything with color in with them because it will bleach it. The next day, put them in the washer and wash them as usual. You will see the dramatic difference.
To effectively bleach a polyester shirt, mix a solution of bleach and water in a well-ventilated area, then soak the shirt in the solution for a short period of time. Rinse the shirt thoroughly with water and wash it as usual. Be cautious not to leave the shirt in the bleach solution for too long, as it can damage the fabric.
To bleach black polyester effectively, mix bleach with water in a ratio of 1:4, then soak the fabric in the solution for 10-15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and air dry. Repeat the process if necessary, but be cautious as bleach can damage the fabric if left on for too long.
