The moon's synodic period of orbit around the earth is 29.53 days, roughly. This is the length of time it takes for the moon to reach the same position relative to the sun as the starting position. So the synodic period reflects the cycle of moon phases. Each full cycle of moon phases takes about 29.53 days to complete. The synodic period covers more than 360 degrees of orbit, because the earth is orbiting the sun at the same time that the moon is orbiting the earth. This means that the moon has to do a little "catching up" each month to reach the same position relative to the sun. The moon's sidereal period of orbit, the true 360 degree orbit as it would be reckoned from the point of view of the distant stars, is 27.32 days. The strong apparent illogic in having 2 orbital periods (there are actually several other kinds of orbit) for the moon comes from the fact that we can clearly observe the moon's phases, and it is perfectly sensible to think of the moon's phases as resulting from the moon's orbit. The sidereal orbit on the other hand doesn't result in anything as dramatic as different phases, or anything else that can be easily observed and identified by casual observers.

There are two periods by which people consider lunar orbits. The first is called the synodic month - 29.5 days. This is the time from one phase of the moon - for example, a full moon - to the same exact phase of the moon the next month. In other words, it is the time for the moon to appear to complete one revolution around the earth. However, there is also the sidereal period of the moon - 27.5 days. This is how long it actually takes for the moon to revolve around the earth, as determined by viewing angle to distant stars. Although it seems as if the moon has not completed a full cycle from earth, it actually has, and the apparent discrepency of 2 days results from the movement of the earth-moon system as it rotates around the sun.

  • It takes the moon 27.3 days to revolve around the Earth. It takes the moon 29.5 days to rotate on it's axis. You may think that it only takes 24 hours for the moon to revolve around Earth but really, the Earth rotates faster than the moon, so you see can see it everyday. If you watch closely, then over the course of a few days, you will notice that the moons location is changing.

The Moon takes about 27 days (27 days, 7 hours, 43 minutes, 11.6 seconds) to go all the way around the Earth and return to its starting position.
27.32 days. Please note that this is the orbital period with respect to the "fixed stars", not the length of time it takes for the Moon go undergo a complete cycle of phases (the synodicperiod), which is slightly longer at 29.53 days. The reason for the difference is that the Earth-Moon system moves significantly relative to the Sun over the course of one lunar orbital period, and the Moon has to go a little further than one complete orbit in order to "catch up" with respect to the Sun's position.

What is it called when the moon moves around the earth?

This is called its orbit. Strictly, the moon and the earth both orbit their common centre of mass. The path of the moon around Earth is elliptical orbit. It takes about 29 days to complete one orbit of earth by moon.
