When examining colonial Africa, Britain and France were the two major European powers involved in the colonization of Africa. Although the Germans, Belgians, Italians, and Spanish all had claims, they were for the most part minor in comparison to the African ambitions of Britain and France. France predominantly focused upon colonizing North Africa, especially along the Mediterranean and West Africa, extending down into the northern regions of what is characterized as Sub Saharan Africa. The British colonized Sub Saharan Africa vigorously, but also pursued colonial aims in North Africa. Egypt was a major British colony in North Africa. France pursued a policy of creating a West to East African colonial empire, while the British focused on a North South axis of colonization. The two empires collided in the Sudan, which ended with France being expelled from modern day Sudan, and firmly entrenching Great Britain as the most powerful European power in Africa. The Belgians held small colonial claims in the Congo, and Italy had small claims along the East African Coast, present day Eritrea. Spain held a small colony in present day Mauritania, named Rio de Oro. Madagascar was colonized by the Portuguese. Germany held relatively small claims in southeast Africa, which were increased under the rule of Bismarck following the Franco-Prussian War. Overall, however, North Africa is usually associated with the French, while Sub Saharan Africa was largely controlled by the British.

By 1914, several European countries held colonies in Africa, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, and Italy. The United Kingdom controlled vast territories, including Egypt, Sudan, and parts of East and West Africa. France had significant holdings in West and North Africa, while Germany's colonies included present-day Namibia and Tanzania. Belgium was primarily known for its control of the Congo Free State, and Portugal maintained colonies such as Angola and Mozambique.
The two European countries that held the most territory in Africa were Britain and France. Britain controlled vast regions, including Egypt, Sudan, South Africa, and parts of East Africa, while France held significant territories in West and North Africa, including Algeria, Senegal, and Madagascar. Their colonial empires were among the largest on the continent during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Berlin Conference was held in 1884 in Berlin. Fourteen European countries and the United States got together to plan the further exploitation of Africa.
The political entities of Africa decreased by the colonization of the Eurpeon countries and America (The political entities are the native countries that had retained their independance during the orignal colonization in 1880). Eventually only 3% of African still held independent countries by 1914. The other countries lost their rights and freedmon to other countries.

Asia also saw European colonial presence, particularly in regions like India (British), Indochina (French), and the Dutch East Indies. Additionally, parts of the Americas were under European control, with territories still held by Spain and Portugal.
