The 2012 the census reports that 161,686 Native American Indians were veterans. There are 31,155 in active duty. There is not a breakdown by tribe, but Navajo and Cherokee make up a large portion of all American Indians. As a percentage of the population native people serve at a higher rate. The vast majority are in the Navy (47%) and more females serve than from other populations.

Native Americans have served in all the wars of the 20th century. 42,000 were in Vietnam (90% volunteers), 10,000 in Korea, 44,000 in WWII at a time when there were only 350,000 American Indians and 12,000 in WWI.

In terms of a federally recognized tribe with a treaty relationship with the US government there has been only one Navajo tribe. Historically, prior to their relationship with the US they were not one politically unit but they were culturally and linguistically one people with some region variations. There never was one over all leader and they lived spread out across thousands of square miles in groups of several related families who sometimes historically were called "outfits". The Spanish, who for 300 years were not really able to conquer them, had a very hard time understanding this idea.

There are over 300,000 Navajo. More than have been alive at any other time. There were about 10,000 or so in 1860. It is even larger if you count people who are part Navajo and part another tribe.
