In very early 1900's NZ had a Rugby team tour Great Britain. One English Reporter wrote that the team was all backs (ie the rear of the team were doing most of the work) but it was printed as All Blacks (also the colour of the rugby jerseys the team was wearing at the time) which has stuck ever since hence NZ adopted it as its national sports colour....of which you will most likely see a Silver fern frond on there as well.
