Only 706 passengers survived on the titanic!
706 survived out of a total of 2,223 passengers and crew aboard, so the total loss of life was 1517 persons.
Steerage passengers were not closely monitored or even recorded well so these numbers may or may not be accurate but they are the "official" numbers. A wonderful first-hand account was written by Survivor Lawrence Beesley, who was initially thought dead and his family in Great Britain was told such. His family continued to disbelieve the reports that he was dead until his eventual contact with them proved them correct. His story, The Loss of the SS Titanic, was written in May of 1912 and published later that year. You can go to gutenbergpress dot com and download an audio recording of the book. You'll hear a story that is quite different from what you've seen and heard before and even disputes the theory that the Titanic broke in half before sinking. Remember two things if you listen to or read this book; 1) He was there, 2) He wrote his memoir a month after it happened and there were no high speed news gathering sources at the time for him to have anything else but what he saw and heard to guide him.
