167 names of victims appear on the memorial, plus one "unknown parts" which has been called a) a deceased infant and b) a collection of random unidentifyable parts. The latter is probably correct since when all was said and done, there were 6 unidentified bodies and 6 missing persons. There was also a woman who died a few months after the fire, allegedly from fire-related injuries, though she hasn't officially been declared a circus fire victim.
The Hartford circus fire occured on July 6, 1944 in Hartford Connecticut and it was one of the worse fire disasters in the United States history. The fire started during an afternoon performance at Ringling Bros and Barnum & Baily circus that was attended by 6,000 to 8,00 people. Some had claimed the cause to be a careless accident. But there were some people (mostly family members of the victims) who believed the fire was a murder crime-it was caused by an arson. Robert Segee who was an employee said in 1950 he was seeing an Indian riding a flaming horse telling him to set the fire. He was sentenced 40 of imprisonment. Hartford investigators had doubts of his confession. Segee had a history of mental illness-it can be proven he was somewhere in Connecticut when the fire happened. In 1994 Segee denied causing the fire then died in 1997. Many historians, investigators and family members of the victims believed the fire to be cause by an arson-if it was caused by an arson, that would be a big mystery.

Well, I don't know the exact code numbers, and I'm sure that there are tons of them, but from what I remember from my Fire Code training, just 3 things are that fabrics now had to be flame resistant (The fabric making up the tent was coated with a highly flammable substance to rain proof it), maximum capacities for occupancies were done because the big top was stuffed to the roof with people, and emergency exits were done because the people had a terrible time getting out in any semblance of order. As I say, I'm sure that more came about, but I can't think of them all. Check out the NFPA website!
They sold nothing in the Circus Maximus, but around it. There were arcades and wooden stalls surrounding t. Everything from fast food to prostitution could be bought there. The outside could be likened to our present day shopping malls.
