Wild budgies are a single species called Melopsittacus undulatus, and native to Australia.

In captivity, there are two main types. One type, called the English or Show budgerigar, is large and husky looking. There is also a smaller, more slender type that is sometimes called the American type. They are both the same species, but each type is more common in different areas. Budgies aren't native to New Zealand, so the only kind there would be either English or American-type, not wild ones.
