Where have New Zealanders fought?

They have fought in many locations since their connection to the British Empire in 1840. The term ANZAC is often used to indicate Australian and New Zealand forces but was obsolete by the outbreak of WWII as Australia and New Zealand, remembering the level of casualties they had suffered under British generalship in WWI, both insisted on their own separate leadership. The first participation by New Zealand recruits seems to have been in the Second Boer War (1899-1902) which was fought in South Africa. Troops were similarly included in the First World War (1914-1918), notably at Gallipoli and Passchendaele, and World War II (1939-1945), with New Zealand declaring war on Germany in solidarity with Great Britain, and fighting the Japanese in the Pacific theatre. New Zealand infantry forces were in many campaigns including North Africa, Italy and Greece, notably in the battles of El Alamein and Monte Cassino, while the New Zealand Air force and Navy operated in both Europe and the Pacific. New Zealand forces participated in the UN war in Korea (1950-1953) , in the Malayan Insurgency guerrilla war (1948-1960), and in a limited role in Vietnam. Troops were sent to East Timor in 2006, and in 2007 ended a long-standing deployment to Yugoslavia following the Balkan wars. New Zealand troops are among the coalition forces in Afghanistan. The first conflicts fought by New Zealanders were fought in New Zealand itself: between 1845 and 1872 various Maori tribal groups fought British Imperial and New Zealand Colonial forces in a series of conflicts known as the New Zealand Wars.
