The value of a particular comic depends on a few things:
The comic title and issue number, print variations - Just because you have issue 1 of a particular title, doesn't make it priceless. In fact issue #2 of some series can sometimes be almost as valuable as #1 since second issues frequently have lower print runs. Though values have since decreased, an example of this used to be #2 of Marvel's 1982 G.I. Joe series. Additionally, comics can sometimes have printing changes or errors that may make those issues more rare and occasionally more valuable.
Particular story/character milestones - First appearances or key events in a character's history can make certain issues more valuable
Condition, condition, condition - An Amazing Spider-Man #1 could be worth thousands in perfect condition or $100 if it's got major issues.
The first Star Wars comic, published by Marvel Comics in 1977 actually had two editions. There is the standard edition with a 30-cent cover price, and a 35-cent variant.
A recent check of eBay auctions showed a CGC 9.4 copy of the 30-cent version that was priced at $70.00 with no bidders.
However, in June of 2011 a 9.6 CGC graded copy of the 35-cent variant sold for $21,805 at auction.
CGC is a company that specializes in grading comic books, assigning them a number score, and seals them in a plastic frame. This process assigns a barcode to the particular issue, allowing it to be tracked as well. Since this process is more precise than the standard, Poor, Fine, Mint, Near Mint scales, this frequently causes comics graded in this manger to sell for many times their usual collectible value.
In the end, the value of an item really comes down to what is it, what kind of condition it's in, and what someone is really willing to pay for it.
It depends on what book it is, how old it is, what store you are buying it from, and how many pages it has (sometimes really big books are pretty pricey)
