The Gestapo's role in France during the occupation was varied. They tried to ID any and all allied spies and collaborators. Needless to say this was an impossible task. They were also to supplement the Abwehr in their operations and aid the SS also. If you like Star Trek, you can use the analogy of the Gestapo as the Cardasians trying to stop the Marquis (which incendently is where they got this name).
